Research to assist the design and development of a new product
I am often asked to carry out research of products in the same field as the product I am designing for the client. This is in order to compare it with competing products and to achieve a better product.
I compile the data that is the most appropriate, for the project in question, from the following items and/or those requested by the client:
- Best feature(s)
- Worst feature(s) mainly mentioned by buyers in reviews
- Comparative cost
- Claimed IP protection
- Possible improvements on the existing products
- Searching and examining patents, especially the list of claims. This is in order to
avoid infringing other peoples' patents whilst still designing a product going after the
same market
- Video reviews of user using the product, such as unboxing a product
- I occasionally buy sample products for my evaluation
